JorZine - Interview with Myrath

Interview with Myrath

Band: Myrath

By: Ali Atef - 2013-05-08

JorZine, as media partners of Dubai Rock Fest 2013, are making a series of interviews with the bands that will participate in this event. Reporter "Ali Atef" has conducted the following interview with Anis Jouini and Elyes Bouchoucha, bassist and keyboardist of the Tunisian Oriental Metal band MYRATH.

1. Greetings Myrath! Thank you for giving us an opportunity to interview you. Give us a brief introduction and history of Myrath.

Myrath is a metal oriental band composed by five members Anis, Malek, Zaher, Morgan and Elyes. The band used to play covers like Symphony X , Death, Sonata Arctica ... then started composing in 2006. We own 3 albums: "Hope", "Desert Call" and "Tales of the Sands".

2. You were formally known as X-Tazy. Was there a particular reason behind the change in the band name?

As the members of X-tasy changed (except Malek and Elyes) and new members were included, we said that we must change the name because it is becoming a completely different band with a new perspective and with a new soul.

3. Is there a significance behind the name Myrath? Does it relate to the band's music?

Of course it is! The name Myrath (in Arabic) which means "Legacy" represents who we are, from where we come from and what's special about us. It's not only a name, it's actually all our Tunisian background and the traditional music we grew up with, we try now to communicate it to the entire world with a modern touch, which is the Oriental Metal music.

4. Who are your inspirations and what made you pick up your instruments?

The cool thing about us is that each member has his own influences and his personal musical style from Blues and Rock to Death Metal. We can say that our music is like a puzzle were you find different shapes and colors that gives in the end an homogeneous and complete picture of his feelings through his instrument.

5. Hailing from Tunisia, we are particularly curious about your vision of your country's Metal scene. Perhaps you could tell us a bit about the metal scene in Tunisia? Did you face any difficulty as a band there?

The Tunisian Metal scene is underfunded despite the presence of so many talented bands (let's say "Barzakh" for example). Kind of sad but we still hope that one day that will change. We never had problems in our country; in fact it's the opposite: we are always warmly welcomed and people often wonder if we will play in Tunisia or not, but as we said before, we did not receive concrete request or offer from Tunisian organizations until now.

6. Your music has a lot of Arabian influence in it and there aren't a lot of bands who play like you do. Was it difficult to get to where you are given your genre was different?

As we are from Tunisia, we use Tunisian scales to compose and arrange. That's why we sound a little bit different than the other bands.

7. Are there any themes and concepts that the lyrics to your music revolves around?

Not really, but the good thing about our lyrics is that everyone can understand them despite of his situation, some can feel that a song is talking about a woman, others think that it's simply about life, and this depends on the angle whose you see the lyrics from.

8. You guys will be performing live in Dubai Rock Fest 2013 in June. How is the band preparing for it and what can fans expect to see at Myrath's performance?

This is so exciting, we can't wait to be there and rock! We will do our best on this festival to make the concert unforgettable to all our fans.

9. This will be the first time for you guys to play in the United Arab Emirates. Do you know any band coming from there?

Yes, this is the first time ever and we are really pleased to do it especially with Malmsteen as the headliner. We do not really know bands coming from there but why not, we're sure that this will be an interesting discovering.

10. You have recently toured several European countries with Tarja Turunen, Orphaned Land and W.A.S.P. Tell us about how that felt!

Oh that was awesome, such a huge experience! You actually learn how to communicate with people from other corners of the world. You know, living in a tour-bus with other people, speaking different languages that you don't understand (and they do not understand yours too!); that makes you feel a bit frustrated on the beginning but when you remember that the music is the reason why we're all here together you realize that this is the language that everyone can speak and understand in the same way. Touring with other bands is not only about performing, it's actually lessons about respect and communication.

11. Besides Dubai Rock Festival 2013, are you guys performing at any other festivals or shows in the Middle East anytime soon?

Unfortunately not, but we would love to do it!

12. Are you guys working on a new album? If yes then when should we be expecting it?

Yes we are working on our new album right now. We want to offer the best for our fans, so this album may take a bit of time to be done.

13. Most bands in this region have a hard time making their band a full-time job and have a day job when not touring. Do the band members have any day jobs to support the band?

Unfortunately and due to the music industry crisis, only few bands can live with their music.. Right now we are unfortunately obliged to have other jobs… But we'll see in the future; maybe everything will change for us. Who knows!

14. Thanks a lot for answering our questions. We wish you the best of luck in your upcoming performances!
